Principle of Operation

This type of flow meter operates by sending short pulses or pings of very high frequency pressure waves through a moving fluid. The velocity of the fluid is calculated by measuring the time required for the ping to transit between sensors.  The duration of the ping is between 2 and 8 cycles. The frequency of the waves are typically between 0.1 MHz and  5MHz.  Pressure waves in this range are called ultrasound.

The sensors used in the meter are a special type called “transducers”  A transducer can convert an electrical signal to a sound wave.  It can equally convert a sound wave back into an electrical signal.

By timing the flight of the ultrasound  pulses with and against the flow, the computer calculates the fluid velocity with no moving parts or obstructions
